The Fort Erie Native Friendship Centres (FENFC) was incorporate on February 17, 1983 and became a member of the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC) in 1984. Its founding directors are: Verna Grace Hill, Gerald Alexander Hope, Olivene Marie Hill, Elaine King, Dalton Bernard St. Germain, Eleanor Elizabeth Martin, Loris Arnold Jamieson, Ethel Leona Moses, Peter Wayne Hill and Orval Porter.
The Head Start Program is a pre-school (ages 3-6) program designed to involve parents and families toensure that everyone is prepared for the transition into elementary school.
The purpose of Makonsag Aboriginal Head Start is to provide a culturally-enriched preschool environment that fosters early learning and enhances pride through education to ensure that Aboriginal children and their families have positive lifelong experiences as members of Aboriginal communities.
Niwasa’s programs build on the natural curiosity and potential of all children and combine that with qualified staff and a curriculum that emphasizes and promotes learning.
In the past 5 years Sivummut Head Start has grown into a program that is celebrated locally and nationally while the originating Aboriginal Head Start components guide all of the OICC programs. Twenty families received extended support and 32 children participated during 840 hours of direct programming.
The Waninawakang Aboriginal Head Start Program (WAHS) strives to support children in their process of discovering the world. We provide holistic programming that stimulates a personal sense of identity, encourages pride in their Aboriginal heritage and promotes a universal acceptance of people in the human race. The Waninawakang Aboriginal Head Start Program provides support, advocacy, and learning opportunities for children and their families in a safe and nurturing environment.
To provide Aboriginal children with a learning environment and culturally appropriate experiences which help them develop socially, intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development toward the overall goal of individual and social well-being.
We are dedicated to providing comprehensive early learning experiences for Aboriginal children between three (3) and five (5) years of age. We recognize that children are our most valuable resource, as they are the future generations. The program is based on caring, creativity, and pride, which flows from the knowledge and traditional community beliefs, all within a safe, nurturing, and holistic environment.
